Alliance for a Healthier Generation and State of Connecticut Healthy Certification Guidelines!
The Alliance for a Healthier Generation’s Guidelines fit perfectly alongside our efforts in nutrition education, locally sourced produce and instilling a lifelong appreciation for good nutrition. This agreement, which focuses on healthy a la carte snacks and beverages, builds on Sodexo’s ongoing commitment to student well-being. We’re proud to be the first food service provider to connect with AHG and work toward dramatically reducing childhood obesity.
East Hartford Public Schools and New Covenant United Methodist Church BackPackers Program
Each year we see students within our community and school district that for one reason or another do not have sufficient amounts of food to eat over the weekend. The East Hartford Public Schools and the New Covenant United Methodist Church have agree to support our initiative to provide weekend backpacks with food donations to be available for students in need in our community. As the School’s Food Service contracted vendor and as part of Sodexo’s “Stop Hunger Campaign” a group of Sodexo employees have volunteered to pack and distribute these backpacks to students in the school district.
The mission of our “BackPackers” program is:
“To stop hunger faced by children on weekends by providing them non-perishable foods in backpacks”.
Officials in each participating school identify needy students that fit the criteria for the program. Student confidentiality is of the utmost importance.
Non-Perishable food is purchased from the Greater Hartford Foodshare Food Bank and put into backpacks by the Sodexo team for distribution each Friday. The participating students pick up their backpacks at a designated location in the school and take them home over the weekend. The backpacks are returned to the school the following Monday to be restocked and redistributed the following weekend.
This program is a proven success in East Hartford
Sponsors fund the program and each year our collaboration increases. Our NCUMC sponsor, and our East Hartford Hunger Action Team participate in the Walk for Hunger in Hartford for Food share with a percentage of the proceeds benefiting the backpackers program.

With current national attention being focused on children’s health and wellness issues, East Hartford Public School District’s Food Service Department is excited to provide parents/guardians a convenient, easy and secure online prepayment service to deposit money into your child’s school meal account at any time. This service also provides parents/guardians the ability to view your student’s account balance through a web site called MySchoolBucks.com.
Myschoolbucks.com is a newly updated version of the previous website . All previous accounts at Nutrikids.com have transitioned over to the new website. All Log in ID’s and Passwords remain the same.
By having money in each student’s account prior to entering the cafeteria, we find the lunch lines move along much faster so your student has more time to eat and be with friends. Also, parents/guardians will have the ability to print out a copy of their student’s eating history report. This history report will show you all dates and times that your student has purchased a breakfast and or lunch within the past thirty days.
To access these services:
- Simply go to: https://www.myschoolbucks.com or click on the My School Bucks logo on the Food Service Website at easthartford.org.
- If you previously had a Nutrikids account, the password and log in ID remain the same and any funds in these accounts have been transitioned to the new website.
- Please refer to the parent training guide for further information.
- From this site you will be able to create your account and add money to your student’s school meal account. All you need is your student’s name, student ID number and school ZIP code. Please choose East Hartford as the district.
Things to know:
- If you have more than one student in the District you can handle all online prepayments from the same online account.
- Payments may be made through an existing PayPal account or with a major credit or debit card.
- In order to use the online prepayment service, a small convenience fee for each transaction will be assessed to cover the bank fees. The convenience fee is $1.95 per deposit transaction. Parents/guardians placing money into multiple meal accounts will only be assessed the $1.95 fee once per deposit transaction.
- East Hartford Public Schools District will not profit from the use of this site.
We are very excited to offer these services, however, if you choose not to take advantage of the online prepayment service you may continue to make advance payments via cash or check, which should be made payable to: East Hartford Public Schools. Letter to Households about School Breakfast Program (from No Kid Hungry Act)
Dear Parent / Guardian,
This year, we need your help to make sure all of our students are fully prepared for academic success. We all know that hungry children have a more difficult time doing their best work. That is why we encourage all students to begin the school day with a nutritious breakfast.
The School Breakfast Program is available to all students every weekday morning. You do not have to register your child in advance. Your child can eat breakfast at school every day or only occasionally. School breakfast makes good sense - it provides ¼ of your child's nutritional needs, meets Dietary Guidelines recommendations, and offers children a chance to eat breakfast with their friends.
School Breakfast is an ideal solution on busy mornings when kids are running late or parents have to be at work early. Whatever the reason, if breakfast at home is not convenient, please have your child take advantage of breakfast here at school.
Children from households whose income is at or below the levels set by the federal government may be eligible for either free or reduced-price meals. To apply, please contact your child’s school.

The price of school lunches has increased to comply with The Healthy, Hunger Free Kids Act of 2010 (Public Law 111-296). The meal increased prices does not affect school children receiving free and reduced meals.
The Central Registration office processes and approves all meal applications, providing they are filled out completely by the parent or the head of household in the family. Central Registration is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. If you have any questions, please call (860) 622-5967 or the information line at 860-622-5080 and select option 2.
All grades - breakfast reduced $0.30 and lunch reduced $0.40.

Lunch Charging Procedures
The Board of Education is responsible for reimbursing the food service fund for outstanding lunch charges at the end of each school year. This restriction on use of food service funds for this purpose is outlined in the State of Connecticut Department of Education Operational Memorandum 19-10. Funds from the non-profit school food service account cannot be used to cover the cost of unpaid charged meals.
The CSDE requires that the household pays all delinquent student debts no later than June 30 to ensure that students’ accounts are closed. Any delinquent debts that have not been recovered by June 30 will be considered bad debt. These student meal accounts must be at a zero balance for the next school year.
Only parents/guardians have the ability to restrict the use of student lunch funds (i.e. lunches only, snack, ice cream on Fridays, etc).
Although not required by law, East Hartford Public Schools allows limited meal charges for students. As federal funds are intended to subsidize student meals, they may not be used to subsidize meals for adults (teachers, staff, and visitors). Adults will not be allowed to charge meals and shall pay for such meals at the time of service.
The District strongly discourages meal charges, but understands that an occasional emergency makes it necessary. The District policy for charged meals is as follows:
- All Grade levels K-12: will be allowed to charge three (3) reimbursable lunch meals only.
- These meals will be reimbursable meals. No a la carte items are to be charged. The School Food Service will inform students when they have begun charging.
- After the 3rd charge, the parents will get a letter from the food services department sent home with the student unless otherwise mailed to the parent or guardian.
- From this point on, until the balance is paid in full, the student will be provided an alternate reimbursable complete meal consisting of a cheese sandwich, milk, fruit and vegetable that meets the meal pattern requirements.
- Letters from both the Food Service department and/or the school will continue to be sent home regarding these balances until they are paid in full.
This procedure shall be updated and available at the beginning of each school year with information distributed regarding free and reduced price meals. This notice is available upon request and may be included in letters sent home from the Food Services Management office.
