Emergency Response Plans

In the event of the closing of school because of inclement weather or other emergency, announcements will be made over the following local radio and television stations between 5:45 a.m. and 8:00 a.m.:

WTIC 1080 AM / 96.5 WTIC FM
WDRC 1360 AM / WDRC 102.9 FM
WRCH 100.5 FM WZMX 93.7 FM
WFSB-TV Channel 3 WTNH-TV Channel 8
WVIT-TV Channel 30

Pupils should listen for such announcements in the event of any heavy storm and should not call the Principal, the Superintendent or the radio stations. If there is no announcement of closing of schools in East Hartford, it means that schools are in session. It is the policy to close schools only when conditions are extremely severe. Should it be necessary to close schools once school has started, announcements will be made over the radio.

Drills will be held in compliance with town regulations. Students should be thoroughly familiar with the directions governing each room in which they have class or study so that they may pass quickly and quietly, when the bell sounds, to the assigned area where attendance will be taken.

Lockdown drills are an important safety measure we are taking here at Sunset Ridge School. We place the utmost importance on the safety of our students and we are constantly self-evaluating to consider how to counter potentially dangerous situations. Just as we have finalized plans for the emergency evacuation of the building in case of a fire, we have been working on plans with the police and other authorities to secure everyone in the event a lockdown is necessary. It is our hope that such an occurrence never happens; however, we have made plans to ensure the safety of all students if there is an intruder or if a similarly dangerous situation arises.

Presently, we lock every door in the building. There is a buzzer located at the front door to gain access to the building. All visitors are required to report to the Main Office to obtain a visitor’s pass. Visitors in the hallway are questioned regularly by teachers and staff, including our Security Officer. We feel that we have placed the security of the school and the safety of its occupants at an appropriately high level of concern, and we are always vigilant of potential problems.

We will review with students the procedures for lockdowns. Periodically, we will have a Stage I lockdown drill, which basically means that all faculty are to secure and lock all students in the classroom for a relatively short period of time. There will be no simulated intruder or other potentially traumatizing events. We are, however, asking students and teachers alike to treat this situation with great seriousness.

It is our hope that by being proactive, we will be prepared in case a problem warranting a lockdown ever happens. We want our students to feel comfortable and safe throughout the process
